Help with the single-sheet method. . .

One sheet, one people!

(Posted 4/23/07)

There has been a lot of discussion lately about conservation and more specifically the reduction of toilet paper consumption by means of the single-sheet method. Sheryl Crow has gotten much attention promoting this. She's even gone so far as to suggest imposed restrictions.

I believe much of controversy is due to the misunderstanding of this method and people should to understand it to appreciate it.

Here is step by step instructions for the single-sheet TP method. Please do your part wherever you can.

Start with a single sheet of standard toilet paper. 2-ply is suggested for novices as it offers some wiggle room for your initial inefficiencies.

Place the index finger of your off hand through the hole up to the second knuckle.

It is important to use your off hand here as you will want the added dexterity of your favored hand in later steps.

Once you are sure you've adequately "squeegeed" the area with your index finger use the sheet wrapped around your finger to remove the material. The amount of diligence you apply is directly proportional to the how confident your later handshakes will be.

Discard soiled paper.

Find the center of the sheet and remove a circle large enough to fit your index finger through.

Set the circle aside for later.

This is a crucial step. Using the exposed finger, wipe.

It important to use a scooping and or swiping motion to collect all of the target material. Note the curvature used in the example.

Now, retrieve the circle you removed previously with your clean hand.

Use this piece to carefully remove the material from beneath the nail.

Discard the soiled piece.

Done.

Once you feel comfortable and efficient you can move to single ply paper and further decrease your TP footprint. Isn't it great to do your part?
