Otter Pops vs. Fla-Vor-Ice

(Posted 7/8/05 by Kirk)

In this "Rant" we're going to try to answer the age old question, "which is better, Otter Pops, or Fla-Vor-Ice?"

When we were kids, we would've eaten either one with joy in our hearts. But now that we're adults, we need to make more informed consumer decisions.

So let's look at them side by side. We may even do a taste test!

And at the end, there's a surprise revelation!

First, let's look at price.

At our local King Soopers, a box of Otter Pops and a box of Fla-Vor-Ice were exactly the same. They were both on sale for "2 for $3.00" or $1.50 for one box.

But that is a bit misleading, because you only get 18 Otter Pops for that price, while you get 24 Fla-Vor-Ices.

Otter Pops

Not to mention the fact that each Otter Pop is only 1 oz., while each Fla-Vor-Ice is 1.5 oz.

That means that the net weight of the Fla-Vor-Ice is twice that of the Otter Pops. (2 lbs. 4 oz. vs. 1 lb. 2 oz.)

And they're the same price!

Another big difference between Fla-Vor-Ice and Otter Pops is the packaging.

Otter Pops have cool otter characters associated with each flavor, while Fla-Vor-Ice doesn't. Fla-Vor-Ice doesn't even tell you what the flavors are supposed to be, they just have colors.

By doing this, Fla-Vor-Ice avoids the strange convention of naming the pops after famous men and helpless little girls.

What is up with that? The only females are a "kooky" little girl and an orphan.

And who is this, "Looie-Bloo Raspberry? Is he supposed to be French? Talk about strange national stereotypes.

Otter Pops

While it is strange to think about a "nutrition" label on an Otter Pop, they do have them. "Nutritionally", they work out almost exactly the same.

Fla-Vor-Ice comes in at 1.72 calories per gram, Otter Pops are 1.86 calories per gram.

This is remarkaby close, considering they only use round numbers on these labels.

Otter Pops

But here's where we started to get suspicious. We were comparing ingredients and we were about to say that they were very similar.

But they're not! They're exactly the same! I mean look at it, "citric and/or fumaric acid"?

What are the odds that they would both have the exact same wording?

The Secret Unravels

Then we found that the ingredients weren't the only things that were exactly the same.

Other parts of the packaging were too.

For example, the directions for use:

Otter Pops

This was just too much of a coincidence.

And then we made our most important discovery:

Otter Pops

You want to know why Fla-Vor-Ice and Otter Pops have the same number of calories per gram? You want to know why they have the exact same ingredients?

Because they're made by the same company!

We didn't even bother doing a taste test, because they're the same thing!

So here's the deal: Since Fla-Vor-Ice and Otter Pops are the exact same product, made by the same company, and since you get twice as much Fla-Vor-Ice for the same price, the only reason to ever buy Otter Pops is if you like the feel of the smaller pops, or if you are charmed by puns like, "Alexander the Grape" and non-puns like, "Sir Isaac Lime" or "Pancho Punch".
